Adult ADHD diagnosis is a wild ride. When I tell people about my diagnosis, I typically get one of two replies. It’s either, “Everyone is a little ADHD,” or, “Everyone has ADHD these days.”
Meanwhile, the diagnosis has been the answer to all the questions I’ve been asking my entire life. It’s wild to suddenly understand why I react the way I do, why I think the way I do, and why I do tasks the way I do.
And yes, if you hang around social media, it does seem that everyone has ADHD these days. As we learn more about what ADHD entails, we also learn that not everyone presents like a six-year-old male, which allows us to understand why so many women fly under the radar, are misdiagnosed, or don’t even know they have ADHD. (Read another great article about what ADHD looks like in women on WebMD, and this one from the National Library of Medicine exploring misdiagnosis of ADHD in women.)
Of course, I’m not a medical professional, and though I do have a diagnosis and use medication for my ADHD, I realise that might not be the path for everyone. These are just a few resources that helped me understand my (mid-thirties) diagnosis and find great hacks for my day-to-day.
* How to ADHD
By far my favourite resource. If you want actual real-life examples of what ADHD can look/feel like for real people, as well as a place where you can send people who don’t understand what ADHD is, this is the perfect channel. There is literally a video explaining every term and symptom, and there are plenty of hacks/suggestions on how to overcome issues.
One of my favourites is the video on ADHD and Motivation. I can’t begin to tell you how many times I’ve berated myself in my life because I can’t just do the thing like a normal adult, and this video really helped me understand WHY.
* ADHD_love
I discovered Rich and Rox on Instagram, and their reels have helped me laugh my way through some of the more difficult concepts of ADHD.
* ADDitude
The ADDitude blog has a shitload of articles covering ADHD in every age group, gender, how it looks with comorbidities, and so much more.
But ADD and ADHD aren’t the same thing?
Actually, Dave… They are. One is just the old name, and we use ADHD now.
* Living With Adult ADHD
Another awesome blog with a long list of great articles.
* Glitter Brain
If you’re looking for a pick-me-up and need some positivity, Glitter Brain is a great resource.
