Review – Ohuhu Acrylic Paint Markers

My love of Ohuhu products is no secret. And, just to get it out of the way, this isn’t a sponsored post, but hoo boy, would I jump for joy if Ohuhu ever decided to sponsor me!

I thought the alcohol markers would be the pinnacle of my artistic joy (I’ve bought two more sets since I reviewed that first one), but then I purchased these Ohuhu Acrylic Paint Markers on Amazon (who isn’t sponsoring me, either).

You guys. I’m IN LOVE with these markers. During my blogging career, I’ve tried multiple brands, super expensive and otherwise, and none of them have ever been like this. (Check out my reviews on Posca Paint Pens, Tooli-Art Paint Pens, and my Updated Review on Tooli-Art Paint Pens.)

This is literally the first batch of paint pens that all just work. No excessive shaking required, no rain dances or saging of the art studio, they. Just. Work. They work on paper, on wood, and on canvas. Leave them in a drawer for a week, two, pull them out, and they still work.

And not only that, but they work beautifully. The pigment and opacity are astounding, and blow both Posca and Tooli-Art out of the water, IMO. I doubt I’ll ever try another brand.

But before I gush too much, let’s talk specs.

Ohuhu Acrylic Paint Markers 36 Colours

  • Dual tips: brush and dot, brush and fine, or fine and dot (my set has brush and dot tips).
  • The dot tip is 1.5mm wide, and the brush is 1.6.
  • Costs between CAD 30 and 33 on Amazon at the time of writing this post.
  • The cotton core structure eliminates the need for shaking or depressing tips.
  • This means the pen is always ready to use, and the paint will immediately and steadily flow onto the canvas.
  • Can be used on multiple surfaces with a waterproof, matte finish.
  • They claim: “Ohuhu acrylic paint markers set offers rich colors with excellent ink coverage, without the risk of paper penetration.” And, believe me, they’re right, but we’ll get to that later.
  • The set comes in a sturdy cardboard box, with the pens divided into two layers, arranged by colour.
  • The set also includes two swatch cards, one on white and the other on black cardstock.

My Review

First of all, holy baloney, the value for money!!!!! These things cost less than a dollar each, but they are by far the best quality acrylic markers I’ve ever used.

The opacity is insane. I swatched both cards twice and took pictures between layers to show off the vibrancy of one versus two layers.

Two Layers:

I’ve also used them on different colours of cardstock, and the paint always pops.

I love the variety of colours, though I would’ve liked a few darker browns, a bluish-red, and a Payne’s Grey. The black is super intense, but the white is more luminescent and requires layers to build up. I like this, though, because it allows me choices about the intensity of my highlights.

The colours also blend better than any other pen I’ve tried, and the layering possibilities are endless. Drying time is fairly quick, with no reactivation between layers.

The brush tips are made of springy sponge that bends well to create different effects. The dot is sturdier and more uniform.

The paint doesn’t penetrate paper, not even cartridge paper, and it doesn’t cause pilling. This is a photo of the back of the previous page, held to a window to prove the point.

Overall, I can’t stop gushing about these pens. I’ve used them on wood, canvas, various kinds of papers and boards, and they just don’t stop. Here are just some of the pieces I’ve created with them. Look at those reds and blues!

By far my favourite paint marker, and one I can’t recommend enough.

Until next time.
