I love granny squares. It’s my favourite thing to crochet. My theory is that the repetitive stitches allow my mind to wander while squares work up fast enough that it feels like I’m making constant progress. Dopamine hits galore!
Since granny squares have become my go-to crochet project, I have heaps of them around the house.
I’m also prone to being chilly, but I don’t always want a full-sized blanket over me. A few years ago, my hubby gave me a half-sized weighted blanket for my birthday. The idea is to wear it over the shoulders and pull it tight, like a hug. I find more comfort when the blanket is over my legs than my shoulders (something about weight on my chest freaks me out), but the concept of half a blanket for the shoulders speaks to me.
So, I put some of my granny squares to work and created a shawl-ish wearable blanket that I can use at my desk. Yes, I’m officially an old lady. 🧐
For this project, I used three skeins of Craft Smart Value in the colour Amethyst and a 5 mm hook. I crocheted solid granny squares following Bella Coco’s tutorial, solid granny triangles following the tutorial by Hopeful Turns (though I left gaps of only two chains in my corners), and the single crochet joining method by TL Yarn Crafts, which you can find at the 4:17 timestamp.

I created 53 solid granny squares and 28 solid granny triangles, but I altered the design at the last moment and embraced the diagonal corners, dropping the four triangles I intended to use for the corners (so I used 24 in total).
I chose the single crochet joining method because of the gorgeous pattern it creates on one side. Since I wanted this shawl to be reversible, I wanted the option of wearing it with the smooth or textured side. I worked two single crochet stitches into every corner.
Once I’d joined all the squares, I worked a round of single crochets (double crochet in UK terms) into every stitch around the outer edge of the shawl. I finished off the project with a round of double crochet stitches (UK treble crochet).

Don’t you just love how it turned out? I might make one for every room of the house! 🤣
Until next time.
